What is Counselling and Psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy involve clearly defining problems and working towards resolving them with a trusted and qualified practitioner. They contain some slight differences despite being used interchangeably.

Psychotherapy is a controlled act, which means that practitioners in Ontario must register with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) in order to practice it.  Practitioners address long-standing emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns that cause distress in one's life using various therapeutic models such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Relational Psychotherapy. Its aim is to facilitate personality change and growth over a designated period of time.

Counselling is not a regulated profession but counsellors can gain certification through voluntary associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). Counselling helps solve problems in the present through the provision of guidance, and support. It is less interventional and more present-focused.
